Did you know the Canada Revenue Agency can go after a tenant if their non-resident landlord doesn’t pay their tax bill? To avoid this, the CRA is telling tenants to withhold 25 % of their rent to pay their landlord’s delinquent tax bill. The catch? Tenants can be evicted for withholding rent by the Landlord and Tenant Board.
No renter should risk eviction because their landlord fails to pay their tax bill. I am calling for:

The LTB to reject evictions if tenants withhold rent for landlord taxes.

The CRA must stop forcing tenants to pay their non-resident landlord’s tax missed tax bill.

Ontario to establish a beneficial ownership registry so residents can know if their landlord is a non-resident.
