I find claims that landlords only want to "help" and not seek out profits. It's absurd. Maybe you want to help, but you want to make money.

If you only care about 'providing housing' there are charites to do so.

Agreed, it's stupid and insulting.

If you want to help housing you can make a donation to a charity to help the homeless. For students, donate to the school.
