Is it legal to be refused because I am currently on welfare?

Due a situation beyond my control my income is now coming from government assistance aka 'welfare'. Look for a new property and was told they would not rent to me because they "refuse to rent to anyone on welfare." Is this legal? What are my rights in this situation?
